The Taylor & Boody
Continuo Organ

A 4 1/2-stop portable continuo organ, Opus 59 of the American organ builders Taylor & Boody, of Staunton, Virginia, was given to Calvary by the Dixon-Ernst family, in thanksgiving for John & Hazel Dixon, and in loving memory of Normon and Esther Ernst. Designed primarily for ensemble use, the instrument also makes a lovely vehicle for the manuals-only literature of the sixteenth to eighteenth centuries. Housed in a fumed-oak case decorated with an angel and dragon, in honor of Calvary's patron, St. Michael, this tracker-action instrument can be played at three different pitch-standards (A=415, 440, and 465), for use with different varieties of instrumental and vocal ensembles. A single keyboard of ebony and bone, spanning 51 notes (C to d), plays the following five registers:

8 Gedackt (oak)
4 Rhorflte (cherry)
2 2/3 Hohlquinte (metal; from Middle C)
2 Principal (metal)
8 Regal (oak resonators)

Listen to this instrument:

William Byrd: Fantasie in C

Johann Sebastian Bach: Prelude on Christ lag in Todesbanden, BWV 695

Dietrich Buxtehude: Toccata in G, BuxWV 164

Canzona in G, BuxWV 170

Alan Lewis, organ
(from the Dedication Service & Concert, May 6, 2007, Don Maue, recording engineer)

The church, designed by Ralph Adams Cram, was built in 1905-7. The walls are of limestone and plaster, the ceiling primarily of oak, with acoustic-tiled vaulting in the ceilings of the side chapels only. The length of the interior is 208 feet, with a height of 55 feet in the Nave, 75 feet at the Crossing; the width at the Transepts is 108 feet. The cushioned pews seat approximately 1,000.
